About the Town
The Town of Babylon is one of the more culturally-mixed municipalities on Long Island. While most town neighborhoods are dominated by one ethnic group or another, as a unit, Babylon's demographics are multi-cultural.

According to the 2010 United States Census Findings:

         The town's total population is 213,603, with an average of 2.87 persons living in 74,233 households. Babylon is the most densely populated town in Suffolk County, with 4,030 people per square mile and 53 square miles of land.

         The median family income is $79,545, although 5.9% of Babylon residents live below the poverty line. Almost 53% of the town households have an annual income of $75,000 or more.

         Demographically, the town's ethnic make up is approximately 72% white, 16% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 3% Asian. Some residents represent two or more races, which is why these numbers total to over 100%.

         According to the census data, the largest ethnic group, based on ancestry in Babylon Town, is Italian, with 59,306 people claiming to have some or all Italian ancestry. People with all or some Irish ancestry number 41,564. Babylon residents with German ancestry total 31,491. 38% of Babylon Town residents reported having ancestry made up of various other groups listed on the census form.


The following is a demographic breakdown of the Town of Babylon's hamlets and incorporated villages: 

Amityville Village

         "The Friendly Village" is 2.1 square miles with a population of 9,523.

         Its median family income is $78,997.

         Slightly less than 5% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


Babylon Village

         Slightly larger than Amityville at 2.4 square miles, Babylon Village has 12,166 people within its borders.

         The median family income is $100,102.

         3.4% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


Copiague

         This hamlet has 22,993 people living within 3.2 square miles.

         The median family income for Copiague residents is $74,207.

         7% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


Deer Park

         The second largest of the town's hamlets, Deer Park has 27,745 people within 6.2 square miles.

         The median family income is $79,054.

         5.4% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


East Farmingdale

         The Census includes the campus of SUNY Farmingdale when calculating this hamlet's 5.4 square miles.

         Median family income is $86,000 for this hamlet of 6,484 residents.

         3.3% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.

         East Farmingdale is the home of Republic Airport.


Gilgo, Oak Beach & Captree Communities

         The beach communities are counted as one by the census, with only 417 people scattered over 8.4 miles.

         The median family income is $170,135.


Lindenhurst Village

         One of the largest villages on Long Island based on population, Lindenhurst boasts 27,523 people within 3.8 square miles.

         The median family income is $89,044.

         Slightly more than 3% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


North Amityville

         With a median household income of $60,653, this hamlet is 2.4 square miles and has 17,862 residents.

         12% of the residents of North Amityville live below the poverty level.


North Babylon

         This hamlet is 3.4 square miles and has 17,509 residents.

         The median family income of $86,483.

         4% of North Babylon families live below the poverty level.


North Lindenhurst

         11,652 people live in this hamlet of 1.9 square miles.

         The median family income is $76,028.

         6.6% of North Lindenhurst families live below the poverty level.


West Babylon

         West Babylon is the largest of Babylon's hamlets with a population of 43,253 within 7.7 square miles.

         The median family income is $82,178.

         4.3% percent of the families live below the poverty level.


Wheatley Heights

         This hamlet of 1.4 square miles is home to 5,130 people.

         It has a median family income of $99,583.

         5.4% of this hamlet's families live below the poverty level.


Wyandanch

         With 4.4 square miles, Wyandanch has 11,647 people.

         The median family income is $54,527.

         15.3% of this population lives below the poverty level.
